nyMusikk, the leading promoter of contemporary music in Norway invited us to design their book, Lyd og ulydighet (Norwegian for Sound and Disobedience) which chronicles the organsation from its inception in 1938 to the present day.
When nyMusikks artistic director Anne Hilde Neset asked us to design the book Lyd og Ulydighet (Sound and Disobedience) she made it clear that the brief would be quite different from the normal ‘free rein’ briefs nyMusikk has given the designers when creating posters, programs and festival campaigns. "We wanted our book to have both 'edge' and character enough to mirror the content – however, it also had to feel timeless and avoid looking too ‘now’. So it was a fairly complex brief – to be both contemporary and timeless." says Neset.
To address the desire for a more conventional book, we created a strict grid and picked two fonts - one serif (for tradition) and one sanserif (for modernism). The designers then approached the design process with a goal of both respecting and simultaneously corrupting the grid system enough to reflect the avant-garde attitude that has permeated nyMusikk’s work over the years. Although Lyd og Ulydighet in many ways is a pure history book, it isn’t exactly traditional stories that are told. The meeting between a very conservative Norwegian cultural elite and the avant-garde music movement was at times rather uncomfortable – so it became important for us to find an expression that would reflect this friction between the traditional and the radical.
We are tremendously pleased with the end result. The cover plays with the title and is referencing both concrete poetry and the cut & paste culture from the 60’s. It has an intense colour that really pops and its playful use of fonts break deliberately with tradition. All this while it manages to be neat and easy to navigate and read.
