Media City Bergen; home to Norway’s news, broadcasting and media innovation.

Connecting national and international media institutions under one identity. Inspiring collaboration for media innovation and international notoriety.

Media City Bergen is an international powerhouse for innovation and knowledge in the media field; a future-oriented and innovative icon for Norway.


The project involved multiple stakeholders from national broadcasters such as NRK and TV2, news media brands BT/Schibsted and BA, the University of Bergen, internationally leading media tech companies such as Vimond & Vizrt, as well Norway’s National Centre of Excellence for Media. The project required close collaboration with the building owners Entra, Mad Architecture and building contractor Hent.


The objective was to create a brand that allowed national broadcaster brands, international media tech corporations, startups and SMEs to coexist, collaborate in a shared space and under a shared identity.

Developing the brand for the Nordic’s leading media hub required a timeless, and geographically relevant concept: Media = Light.


Light has been the metaphor for mass media since Gutenberg’s press, in the digital age light has become our medium, the pipeline of our knowledge economy, the canvas of our digital age.


The concept is universal, while being specific to the geographical qualities and Nordic context; light playing a profound role in Scandinavian life. It is through a unique range of hues that we present technology with a Nordic story.

The combination of these hues—organised into red, green and blue—produces white light through what is known as additive colour: the physics behind how we experience media; on our screens, tablets and mobile devices. The brand identity therefore being the collective glow of the quality of the products and initiatives of Media City; taking a back role to the media allowing the content to shine.


Key applications beyond the organisational brand design included wayfinding, signage and interactive spacial design and installations.

Eiris, is an interactive media installation strategically positioned within the entry atrium at MCB. Greeting visitors, Eiris’ job, like a media personality of the information age, is to present and personify content. Like a person – an entity in today’s society is determined by its interactions – the form, quality & frequency of them. We are what we share, why we share and how we share.


The result is a provocative and emotive presentation of media — blurring the boundaries between ‘medium’, ‘content’ and ‘audience’.

The brand has been a proven success since opening in late 2017. Attracting greater numbers of businesses into Media City and retaining core media businesses.


Collectively the brand has established international recognition within the media industry; supporting the growth member organisations both nationally and internationally. The collaboration and innovation which has been enabled through the hub, has become a key factor to the member organisations success.
