Lysverket is the ambitious result of an idea forged in the minds of a musician and a Michelin chef. They set out to start a restaurant that puts tiny Bergen on the gastronomical map with an uncomprimised use of local seafood and other ingredients from the area. Housed in the beautiful building that used to be Bergen Lysverker (eng. Bergen Electrical), and part of Bergen Art Museum Kode, Lysverket has become a hot spot for diners, drink enthusiasts and night clubbers.
Bergen Lysverker is the old name for Bergens main electrical power company, and from 1938 until 1999 the buliding that now house Lysverket, was their main office. As the restaurant is named after the building´s original resident, we wanted to incorporate the history and architecture of the building in the visual identity.
We were looking for an expression
that just as easily could be the power company´s identity in 1938 as the restaurant´s in 2014.
In the city´s archive we dug up pictures and architectural drawings of the building and studied i.e old signage og typography fo find an expression that just as easily could be the power company´s identity in 1938 as the restaurant´s in 2014.
From looking at the architect´s old drawings from above we noticed that the restaurant part of the building is a perfect square, and the iconic tower is a perfect circle centered above the square. This tower is a landmark in Bergen, so we decided this composition was an ideal base for the logo.
Being a gourmet restaurant, bar and night club, an important part of Lysverket´s profile is it´s including atmosphere. We wanted to reflect this in the visual identity, so we merged the logotype with the symbol, and included the feature of the flexible frame that´s used to adapt the logo to all shapes and formats.
